Why it's great quality

We import our organic cardamom powder (also sometimes referred to as 'The Queen of Spices') from Sri Lanka, hence the "Ceylon" label. This is to differentiate it from cardamom sourced from India which has sadly be caught up in a lot scandals lately regarding contamination of its herbs and spices with nasty pesticides that are banned in Europe. Many batches tested also had unsafe levels of bacteria. More information in this BBC News article.

This is the highest quality cardamom available to us, our partners in Sri Lanka also export it to countries such as Thailand where local chefs and tastes demand the best spices for the local cuisine.

Nothing added, nothing taken away. No additives or preservatives. No nasties.

WHAT IT’S FOR

Cardamom has a complex flavour profile which somehow works in both sweet and savoury dishes. As you may expect, it's an essential ingredient in chai and classic Indian spice blends such as garam masala. Perhaps more surprisingly it's also found in many Scandinavian baked goods. It also may have some medicinal uses, it's used in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine for stomach complaints such as IBS, nausea and a muscle relaxant.

Contraindications: None.

WHERE IT’S FROM

Cardamom is related to ginger and turmeric. This product is the green variety, the pods are dried and crushed in to a fine powder. It's originally from the Indian subcontinent and Indonesia, but is now cultivated all over the world. We source ours from Sri Lanka which prides itself on high quality spice production.

Environmental impact

Biodiversity Conservation - Cardamom is typically grown in shaded agroforestry systems, which mimic natural forests. These systems can support wildlife and enhance biodiversity.

Soil Health - The plants from which cardamom comes from are grown in hilly regions, where their root systems help prevent soil erosion and improve soil stability.

Carbon Sequestration - Agroforestry systems with cardamom contribute to carbon sequestration, helping combat climate change.
